who is kantner?
Paul Immanuel Georg Kantner (March 17, 1941 – January 28, 2016) is known
to most as an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, co-founder
Jefferson Airplane, one of the leading psychedelic rock groups of the
counterculture era, and its spin-off band Jefferson Starship.
Kantner was an outspoken advocate of freedom of speech, especially on
subjects fundamental to the aforementioned counterculture; openly
acknowledging the roots of many of his convictions in earlier culturally
and politically progressive groups, such as The Weavers (particularly the
singer, songwriter, actress and political activist Ruth ‘Ronnie’ Gilbert).
Less well-known to the larger public are his intellectual accomplishments.
In his spare time Kantner (sometimes spelled Cantnor) engaged himself in
mathematical pursuits, particularly in the exploration of set theory and
transfinite numbers, and comprehensive and systematic critical examination
of epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics. Former colleagues opine that
Kantner’s work will (once various portions of his ‘Nachlass’ are published)
most likely greatly influence all subsequent philosophy.

Paul Kantner is the one playing the Rickenbacker 360/12 ‘Mapleglo'
12-string electric guitar — and NOT wearing a suit and tie.
An interview with Kantner (in which, among other things, he expresses his
indebtedness to The Weavers, ‘Ronnie’ Gilbert, et al.) is found at
