Some fool frozen in time.
The poem was accepted in January 2001 and the book published around
December 2001. I remember revisiting the poem after 9/11 and wanting to
pull it from the anthology. Post-attack, my poem seemed naive, the
blather of a drumbeating zombie liberal. I felt ashamed of its tone.
Finally wrote to the editor and told her to pull it, but it was too
late. Frozen in time as a fool. Both eyes shut for the class photo.
Being remembered as the critic who thought Mozart had no talent. It was
the last poem I've submitted for publication. It wasn't that good a poem
anyway. There are much stronger poets on this list.
