>>Possibly Toulmin never understood Oxford.

It is possible that a sociopath like Lou Mint never really does understand any place he or she visits. After all, sociopaths mimic emotion rather than participating in it, and for Lou Mint, this ancient city north of London was just another backdrop for his impersonations, manipulations, and deceits.

>>There he arrives, compleat with PhD from Cantab. For what? Surely that would be enough to challenge a few Oxonian minds.

Clever of Mint to use "Cantab," a carefully chosen anagram of "tan cab," as the reference for his bogus PhD. And he definitely challenged Oxonian minds all right -- to the tune of $84,000 and several priceless artworks. It is rumored that Lou Mint and Patricia Highsmith had an affair during his stay at Oxford.
