Indeed it does seem that 'estrangement' (among many other miseries) is indeed
'standard' in familial relationships. Indeed for a vast number of us, it seems
that the ideal of the 'normal' happy family is some sort of myth.
My immediate reaction to suggestions made in non-familial relationships
(landlord/tenant, employer/employee, divers groups and committees, etc.) that
formal/legal 'complexities' be eschewed in favour of running things 'more like
a family' has always been (either a loudly exclaimed or sotto-voce-articulated)
"Certainly not like mine!"
