John,
How long will you be in Kobe? If you have only a day and an interest in
Japanese tradition, do the obvious thing and head straight for Kyoto and
Nara. We may be able to put you on to a friend who owns a car and loves
showing off Kyoto to visitors. If you have a bit longer, you might want to
consider a bullet train ride to Yokohama, where we can put you up for the
night and show you some highlights of the city Ruth and I call home.

Before you make your choices, if you have choices, do have a look at the
chapter on Japan in Ray Scupin, ed., Peoples and Cultures of Asia. Ruth and
I wrote it and filled it with all sorts of what we consider useful
information about a place that has come a long way from chrysanthemums and
swords.

If the book isn't in your library, I can send you electronically, the ms.
for the chapter.

John
