Dear all
David Richie asks -- possibly rhetorically -- when we do a thing too
much (what the reason might be). It is a good and interesting line of
inquiry, as it foregrounds our penchant for moderation in the face of
excess. A philosopher with too many books by Wittgenstein might
counter that the answer to such an inquisition is apparent in the very
wording of the question: of course there must be a cause behind a
state that is excessive; had it not been we would not have searched
for a cause, would we?
Dylan was drinking, we could say, but when did we get to say that he
was drinking too much? To supplement Richie's well-reasoned point that
assertions of causality can never be anything but perfunctory
assumptions, preliminary beliefs awaiting their refutations, we could
also say that proposing a state as worthy of causal investigation is
in itself grounds for examination.
Please consider the above as attempts at making even less sense.
