This afternoon, following close on the heels of a couple of 70 degree days (it'll be back to 3 degrees by this weekend here) a rather freakish storm hit, complete with golf-ball sized hail, 60 mph winds, torrential rain, and funnel clouds. (Do remember that just last week there was a severe ice storm and single digit temps here.) The height of the storm this afternoon struck just as schools were dismissing, so there were frequent tv news updates re. schools keeping students indoors and postponing putting them on buses until the tornado warnings and sirens had ceased. The latest update, given by a local news persona who has been on the same station for years, was a litany of the schools which had opted to postpone dismissal and which were now releasing students. Her parting statement was (verbatim), "So the moral of the story this afternoon is that most of the buses are running late, but most schools have now released students. Back to you, Dave."
