Two World Cup events

..to entertain all those with Southern hopes

#1 - 1978 Cordoba
June 2,Argentina against Peru in a game they must win 4-0 (or better) to go to
the final. Two years after the military junta took power a soccer success was
sorely needed. Rumours have it that Peru received USD 50 mill. and some
shipments of grain to lay down. Within shouting distance of River Plate
Monumental Stadium the inmates at the ESMA torture center could hear Argentina
win 3-1 in the final against the Netherlands.

#2 - 1986 - Mexico City
June 22, Argentina against England in their first stand-off in a major sporting
event since the Falklands/Malvinas conflict four years before. After England
had won in their 1966 game, manager Alf Ramsey had called Argentine players
"animals" as the latter had received three warnings and had one player sent
off (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A561944). In 1986 Argentina won 2-1 after
two of soccer history's most famous goals, both by Diego Armando Maradona:
first the "hand of god" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbbsytHDp2o), then the
dribler -- to some the greatest soccer goal of all times
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rW-lK9F6TU).

Happy World Cup.
