Also in Finlay's book is the tale of poet Su Dongpo's experiments with
making ink from wine lees. Apparently at the end of a particularly
arduous or vini-ous experiment, he nearly burned down his house, which
caused him to wonder whether soot from burned poet's homes might be a
really good ink ingredient.
