Article in today's NYT about the mercenaries in Iraq. There are some 20,000 mercenaries in Iraq. They are the second-largest contingent after the USA (120K). There are more mercenaries than British troops. Since the start of 2003, contractors have filed claims for 94 deaths and 1,164 injuries. Blackwater isn't just sending out soldiers. They also have combat helicopters. It's a serious quasi-military force.
