the notion of implicature is normative hence uninteresting to anyone who would
give a 20 second period of thought to language understanding.>
Whether this claim is typical of the kind of claim Palma is apt to make, as I
think, we can take it as an example. Imagine it was a quotatn in an exam, with
an appended "Discuss."
Where would we start?
Perhaps: what exactly is the author's thesis? Is it that "implicature" is
"normative" and therefore "uninteresting" to proper "understanding" of
language? Is this 'thesis' based on the assumption that whatever is "normative"
is therefore "uninteresting" to proper "understanding" of language? If so, how
is such an assumption to be defended? If not, how is its normativity enough to
justify dismissal of "implicature" as "uninteresting"? [The only interest in
Palma's previous post was, as I pointed out, 'implicatural' - so his own
previous post sits uneasily with his claiming implicature "uninteresting" to
"understanding".]
These kinds of question can be multiplied, and they indicate that the claim is
one of bare assertion rather than part of any coherent argument.
After bare assertion, somewhat arrogantly expressed, Palma's post descends into
ungrammatical gibberish - so we might regard this claim as the high-point of
his post. [Unless we like the hurling of poorly expressed invective so much
that this is the high point of our day - as may be the case for Palma.]
