Australia and Indonesia's fast-improving relationship will move up another =
notch next month when president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visits Australia.

An Australian Embassy spokeswoman said Dr Yudhoyono was expected to accept =
an invitation from Prime Minister John Howard and travel to Australian in A=
pril, although exact dates were still being worked out.

"He has said Australia was at the top of his list," she told AAP.

"He has also said that his first priorities would be countries who attended=
 his inauguration last October."

Dr Yudhoyono's swearing-in on October 20 last year was witnessed by a numbe=
r of regional leaders, including Mr Howard, who has built a close relations=
hip with the former general.

The two leaders met again shortly afterwards at the APEC summit in Chile an=
d again at a meeting of regional leaders in Laos, where Mr Howard reissued =
an invitation to Dr Yudhoyono to visit Canberra.

The last official visit by an Indonesian president to Australia was in June=
2001, when Abdurrahman Wahid ignored nationalist opposition at home and st=
ill-raw wounds over Australia's 1999 military intervention in East Timor to=
travel to Canberra in the last days of his presidency.

After meeting Mr Howard then, both leaders vowed to begin a new era in ofte=
n-strained relations and put differences over East Timor behind them.

But those links hit a new low almost immediately amid a row over people smu=
ggling.

In September 2001, new president Megawati Sukarnoputri refused to return a =
phone call from Mr Howard to talk over an asylum seeker standoff on the Nor=
wegian freighter Tampa.

Australia hopes Dr Yudhoyono's election as Indonesia's sixth president will=
 lead to closer relations.

Canberra was one of the largest individual donors following the devastating=
Boxing Day tsunami and earthquake, promising Jakarta $1 billion in grants =
and loans.

Inspecting the damage in Aceh in February, Mr Howard took a personal phone =
call from Dr Yudhoyono, who called to thank him for Australia's swift assis=
tance.

The two countries have also moved closer following the October 2002 Bali bo=
mbings and the joint investigation of the September 2004 bombing outside th=
e Australian Embassy in Jakarta, despite Megawati's cool stance towards Can=
berra.

Dr Yudhoyono has vowed to build closer ties with the west, including Austra=
lia, to encourage foreign investment and help his government implement his =
promised second wave of economic and social reform.

But the two countries have also had differences over Australian defence upg=
rade plans and Jakarta's commitment to tackle terrorism.

Australia earlier this month complained about the light sentence given to r=
adical cleric and alleged Jemaah Islamiah terror chief Abu Bakar Bashir.

The federal government on Friday updated its travel advice for Indonesia, e=
choing warnings from the United States that a shopping centre in Jakarta co=
uld be the target of a terrorist attack.
