Tensions are easing ahead of the meeting here involving the foreign ministers of both countries, with Indonesia withdrawing five of its seven warships, despite a series of angry anti-Malaysian protests. Claims by both countries are claiming the disputed area of the Sulawesi sea, near the land border between Indonesia's East Kalimantan province and Malaysia's Sabah state were recently unbalanced by Kuala Lumpur's granting of oil exploration rights. Warships from both countries have come into close contact in the area several times since Feb 16, when energy giant Shell was given a concession in the area by Malaysia's state oil company Petronas. Protestors, riled by Malaysia's expulsion of Indonesian migrant workers, have also gathered in major cities, volunteering to fight and demanding that the country mobilizes to "crush Malaysia". Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who toured islands near the disputed area off the eastern coast of Borneo island yesterday, has played down the incident, saying it will not affect cordial ties with Kuala Lumpur. "I think we are in a friendly, neighborly situation and not in a confrontative atmosphere, not in a condition of enmity against Malaysia," he said. Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said yesterday that Malaysia will also seek to avoid a clash with Indonesia but stresses it will not compromise on its territorial interest and sovereignty. Syed Hamid also accused the Indonesian media of trying to blow the issue out of proportion, while observers said Jakarta is using the issue to detract from problems at home, including an unpopular fuel price hike. The Malaysian foreign minister is due to told talks in Jakarta later today with his Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirayuda to discuss the the problem. Malaysia and Indonesia previously disputed the ownership of two small islands in the same area, but in Dec 2002, the International Court of Justice ruled that the islands belong to Malaysia. tn/bjn/rcw/swp http://www.iii.co.uk/news/?type=afxnews&articleid=5231670&subject=economic&action=article ------------------------ Yahoo!
