It's worth noting that the libraries compile fine (no gnulib
challenges), so I don't imagine that'll need a runtime library and thus
will not be a problem for embedded. The gnulib problem is with the
tools, which shouldn't need to be compiled for embedded.

Yup, I think that was the main reason that John didn't want an external dependency.
