It's worth noting that the libraries compile fine (no gnulib challenges), so I don't imagine that'll need a runtime library and thus will not be a problem for embedded. The gnulib problem is with the tools, which shouldn't need to be compiled for embedded.

That is one thing. The other thing is migrating the code to make use of the lib.

Yup, I think that was the main reason that John didn't want an external dependency.
