Considering the discussion of licensing, I think it would be a good idea if our websites contained a page on licensing and use. This should be a separate page with a link to it on the home page to make it stand out. It might go something like this: liblouis, liblouisxml and their associated programs are open-source and are free for anyone to download and use according to the following terms. 1. liblouis and liblouisxml are libraries licensed under the Lesser (or Library) Gnu Public License (LGPL). Anyone can link to them without restrictions on the licensing of the calling program. This is already done by some proprietary packages. Their code can only be modified under the terms of the LGPL. The tables and files which they use are also under the LGPL. 2. the liblouis tools (lou_checktable, lou_debug, etc.) are discrete programs which link to the liblouis library. They are licensed under the Gnu Public License (GPL), so that they can use code enhancemenss which are also licensed under the GPL. Anyone can include them in a package without interfering with the licensing of other components of the package. They may be called from other programs with command-line arguments, but may not be linked to. They are unsuitable for linking in any case. 3. The above comments apply also to the command-line interface to liblouisxml called xml2brl . It may be called from a GUI or other program with command-line arguments without affecting the licensing of the calling ppogram. This is already done by some packages. -- John J. boyer; President, Chief Software Developer Abilitiessoft.com, Inc. http://www.abilitiessoft.com Madison, Wisconsin USA Developing software for people with disabilities For a description of the software and to download it go to http://www.jjb-software.com
