Actually, after yet more tracing, the problem is even simpler. This can be
fixed without taking any risks.
If I place the replacement brackets in the test part more accurately, the
actual problem is that the checkDots() function is incorrectly reporting a
mismatch because the test contains dots whereas the input has already been
converted to characters.
If I get this to work, how would you like me to send you the fix?
