OK, I wasn't certain and now you mention getting repeated dots 56 for
that first rule I think I had a similar issue when creating a different
rule.
I have done a bit more looking at it and my original suggestion of @56*
was wrong, it appears that can be used in the third column. So yes your
original suggestion looks correct.
Using your original rules could you try it in lou_trace and see whether
your rule is being picked up or not.
I created a similar rule to what you describe and whilst the rule was
applied I got something rather unexpected in the output which suggests a
bug in LibLouis. Would be good to see what you get to confirm its not
something strange specific to my system.

I think that for the first of the context rules you gave it wouldThat gives me a zillion dots 56 cells. Yes, I really do mean a zillion. I
need to be specified as:
context `[]%englishLetter @56
didn't count them, but it's a huge nubmer of them. My input, by the way, is:
abc def
If the second column has no brackets then I think it is assumed the bracketsDoing it that way gives me dots 56 followed by the second letter (so the first
surround the whole of the second column.
character is missing). Same with the second rule done that way (no brackets).
