Thanks Everyone for the great advice much appreciated and well timed for us.

We just got our 20+ Mangers and Execs on laptops and will do coordinators &
supervisors next - then all 250 staff computer users in blocks depending on
resources and budget.
For managers we actually saved a little money as we replaced their workstations
and iPads with "only" a laptop.

Reason for this approach is BC which is our main driver to go full laptops -
now fully backed by Execs.
We learned a lot from the 4 days power outage we had due to Cyclone Seroja.

I think laptops also have the advantage of very low power consumption - both
for the environment and BC.
BC cases of some hours of power outage running on batteries and some days
outage causing less load on generator.
We have a big UPS that keeps all our network equipment up for several hours
until we attach a mobile generator from a contractor.
(UPS is from 2008 and a leftover from server room before we went IaaS - btw
never get a single big UPS, rather at least two for backup.)
For BCDR we can then also move staff easily to other location (our BCDR site),
our works depot which is 5km out of town (at our airport).

We are a happy Dell shop. Recently tried HP, but were not convinced of support
and quality/price ratio.

Current topics for us - which we will get quotes on and run the numbers:

1.      Currently all staff have dual screens. So we can either buy a second
"normal" screen or replace with single "extra-wide" screen. Latter we did for
managers.

2.      Screen Built-In docks - less hassle for IT, simpler for everyone. But
if one breaks requires replace both.

3.      4G Slot for BC. Cost/benefit factor?

4.      We probably won't provide a second headset for working away from the
office - we think built-in mic/speaker will suffice.

We don't want staff to take headsets away from office as we don't manage them
as assets to keep effort low - same as keyboards and mice.

5.      Low Spec i5 probably.

Hi John,

We rolled out all HP laptops with our engineering staff receiving CAD HP
laptops. These laptops all use the same universal dock that we also have setup
at hot desks in the office.

Users are meant to bring their own dock into the office when they come in and
then take it home etc - we have not allowed a second one to be purchased.

All desks have dual monitors.

We manage all our devices through Intune.

We use VPN for staff to access the Council network should they require. We are
a full 365 site now, so the VPN demand has decreased.

*           Would you mind telling us what type of Laptops you have deployed?

*           What docks you use? Monitors with inbuilt docks?

*           Remote access method? Thin client, VPN etc.

*           Deployment method? MDT, WDS, AutoPilot, Intune

Good morning all,

We are considering our plans for the future with regards to computer equipment
procurement for all staff. There has been a 'reactive' move to more laptops and
mobility over the last 12 months due to COVID.

Have any council's out there made the change to 100% laptops for staff, to
either introduce hot desking, or just to allow work from home for all staff if
required?
