We have been slowly moving everyone to laptops over the last 3 years.
I would say we are 80% there and the only thing stopping the rest 20% are
budget limitations.
For us, it’s been nothing but positives, I really can’t think of any
issues/negative things we faced because of the transition.
Here are some of the tips/advise I can give from my experience.
1. Don’t cheap out on the hardware. A good laptop will give you less trouble
even though it might be a bit expensive in the beginning. We bought few cheap
models, and they haven’t aged well.
1. Purchase universal docks, so it could be used with any manufacture’s
laptop. I see countless sysadmins on reddit that have bad experiences because
they bought a not so good docking station.
1. Stick to few models as possible, this will make troubleshooting, managing
a lot easier for IT
1. If you use SCCM for imaging, have a look at Driver Automation Tool (DAT).
It is an open-source software that will make installing/updating/managing
drivers a breeze.
1. Install “Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter V2” on every conference room
TV (I know there are more expensive seamless solutions, but this is good cheap
option). HDMI cables can be a thing of the past.
1. Make sure your corporate wireless network can handle the extra traffic,
because there will a lot more devices accessing the corporate Wi-Fi.

Subject: lg-it Policy or direction to move to increased mobility?
Good morning all,
We are considering our plans for the future with regards to computer equipment
procurement for all staff. There has been a ‘reactive’ move to more laptops and
mobility over the last 12 months due to COVID.
Have any council’s out there made the change to 100% laptops for staff, to
either introduce hot desking, or just to allow work from home for all staff if
required?
