Forgot to mention: a new feature was added to the Help, Diagnositics, Log Commands... command. There is a checkbox labeled "Monitor document integrity". It doesn't do much, and it's probably uncomfortably slow on large documents, but anytime the heightfield is rendered, it will doublecheck that the vertical span is what it's supposed to be, so that the colormap will safely map to the elevations. If the logfile includes this policy violation, it means that elevations have changed "behind the program's back", so to speak, and one source of render-related crashing can be investigated.
