Thanks Brian and Doug,
I would like to share a link I found to an 'auction result listing' for a
pair of "Field Glasses" used by General Jeb Stuart during the American Civil
War while fighting for the Confederacy (The South). Was sold in a 'Historica'
auction a few years ago - with authentication etc etc. Mine are identical to
the one shown other than 'his' doesn't have stap lugs by the eye pieces as on
my pair. The listings for Chevalier 'glasses' in the link Brian gave all seem
to be quite decorative pieces with chasing, mother of pearl, etc. My pair seems
like 'working' glasses a sailor or soldier or a 'naturalist', might have taken
into the field.

I would love to have the 'case' like the one in the auction, but alas, for a
few bucks at a garage sale, one takes what one gets! :-) I really like my
little find - it has some serious dust build up here and there and worst of all
a green patina developed in a small area. I'm doing this research as part of
making sure I 'clean' these things in an appropriate manner. It's value to me
is mainly for being an old optical treasure - doubt it has much monetary value,
but I also don't want to take steps now in the early 2000's which would crush
it's value in -say- the 2100's.

UPDATE!!!! I 'joined' the above website to get better pix of the item and found
a few surpises. The size looks about the same, but lots of differences too. The
binoculars listed in the link have leather coverings where mine has Black
Enamel Paint and Ole Jeb's pair has a leather/guttapercha/? molded eyepieces
with molded in corporate markings where the eye cups in mine are painted solid
metal units. Hmmmm

I'm starting to wonder if mine are either very early or ones made to a much
lower specification at a later date - perhaps for war time. As in World War
One.

Still counts as an Uber Cool Object de Art for me. :-)
Much like my Rolleiflex TLR, my Zeiss Contaflex fixed lens SLR, and my Busch
Pressman 45D.

Hello Richard,

There appears to be a relevant reference book:
Spectacles and other vision aids: a history and guide to collecting, by J.
William Rosenthal. It contains references to Chevalier Opticien. You can
search it in google scholar via this link:

There is also an opportunity to purchase it from Amazon, but it's a bit
pricey...

Hope this helps a bit,
Brian
