I have noted with some surprise the incredible price for the new Leica 28-90
Asph zoom lens ($3295.00 ). Today I had the opportunity to hold and examine
several models from the Canon Eos line with one of their 70-200/2.8 image
stabilizing pro lenses, and a few of their wide angle zoom pro lenses, one
about equal to the Leica lens above. Interesting to note that the Eos1V
WITH the telephoto pro-lens noted above costs about the same as the Leica
lens alone, and SEVERAL of the wide angle zoom lenses and the camera body
would cost LESS then the leica lens noted above. If one went "down "just a
slight bit to the Eos model under the 1V ( according to the pro here about
the same without a few of the probably unnecessary bells and whistles ),
then one might be able to get the body, the pro telephoto lens, the battery
back with winder, and several of their pro quality image stabilized wide
angle lenses ( 2.8 ) for about the same price ( give and take a few bucks )
as that one Leica lens. Yup....a professional quality camera, and 3 image
stabilized lenses with winder, lenses are top of the Canon line, for just a
slight bit more then the price of that one Leica lens that has focal lengths
that are not at all esoteric.
I ask that the Leica lovers ( and I am certainly one with a VERY extensive
and complete investment in both M and R gear of all kinds...bodies and
lenses, accessories, etc. ) not get too excited when I ask what the deuce is
going on? The Canon AF Eos is nice. OK....the viewfinder is perhaps just
smidgeon less bright then the R8 and R9....but the AF is quick and quiet,
the body is substantial, etc., etc. One can purchase a Canon digital camera
body and use all of the lenses noted above... cost is a LOT less then the R
digital module that will be here very shortly. Indeed, one might have
almost $4,000 bucks left over for several vacations at which to use the
cameras.
I realize none of us has a ready reply, and we are biased towards Leica
glass and "quality"....and most of us are not going to dump our beloved
Leica gear for Canon...but I must admit to wondering, " What is Leica really
thinking"? They must sell everything they make to a small devoted group of
Leicaphiles who will ante up the $5,000 for the digital module....but geesh,
why can't we have a zoom lens, 28-90, for something aproaching a realistic
price?
Elliot who will continue to use the R8 and R9, but will continue to
wonder....
