I suppose it depends on time of year and where and what you will be
shooting. Get the door off before you leave the airfield. No problem they
pop off quite easily and it's the only way for aerial shoots. Generally the
little bitty windows are a pain in the ass.

The other thing and very important.... if he is flying a low wing plane
forget it! The wing will always be in the way. You want a plane with the
wing above your head. Then you only have to worry about the wing strut, but
you'll get the angle quickly.

If you're over the city the pilot will have air regulations as to the height
he must maintain and no lower. If it's country side and you're not going to
spook a farmers animals fly the height you want for the best picture
composition.

Just hold the camera in your hands and make sure the neck strap is around
your neck .... "just in case!" And use as high a shutter speed as you can...
at least a 1/500th and higher!

If it's warm weather take the door off and fly without it. I've flown in the
high Arctic at minus 40 degrees with the door off in a helicopter for short
haul shoots. They a far better shooting location and it's no big deal.
Watch that you don't lean out into the slip stream in the plane. If you
don't understand what that is? If you lean out you'll find out very quickly.
:-)

Regardless of how good your friend is as a pilot tell him to watch where
he's flying the plane and never mind looking at what you are photographing!
Trust me, right there is the very best advice any one of us can give you! It
only takes one near death experience when the pilot is looking at what you
are shooting and nearly flies into the trees on top of a hill so close you
have branches and leaves all in the under carriage when you get back to the
airfield! To close to death for me! :-(

Since that one situation, I always give the pilot the same message, politely
and why I am telling him.

Better still, if your friend has a helicopter make sure the door is off,
then you have this great big open space to shoot from. :-) And if you want a
really cool ride, sit on the floor and yer legs hanging over the side! ;-)
no ride like it! :-) Oh yeah and make sure you have a very good safety
harness on. :-)

have a good shoot!
cheers,
ted
