[LRflex] Dumb idea? Good idea?

All:

I look at Leica's photo numbering system, and wonder "why?" After
all, it's simply an L, followed by 7 digits... a 3 digit folder
number, and a 4 digit "serial number. Use up 9,999 photos, and the
folder number increases by one.

Like many, I try to file my photos in sequence ... by date. So, I'd
like to see the numbering system draw it's folder number off the
built in calendar, within the camera. The sequence would be
YRMOSNUM. Thus a photo taken today, might be 07071234. When the
clock ticks over to August, a new folder would be created, with the
digits 0708 and the serial number reset to 0001.

Of course, this system would only be good for those who shoot 9,999
or fewer photos per month, so a camera would have to have the
"normal" numbering system as an option.

However, for those of us who shoot fewer than 10k photos per month,
we'd be able to say ... "Hmmm.... I want to see my photos of Costa
Rica ... was there in Dec 05/Jan 06... " and thus simply go to the
folders 0512 and 0601 to find them. Fast and easy!

To me, it makes more use of the leading 4 characters than Canon's
"IMG_" , Nikon's "_DSC" or Leica's "Lxxx".

I've thought of passing this on to Leica, as a firmware option for
the R10. But, before I do, I thought I'd ask ... a good idea? Or a bad idea?

The more who take the time to answer, the better, as I will quote the
statistics to Leica. So, if you prefer to lurk, please send your
answer (it need be a simple, "good" or "bad") to me, off list, at
telyt@xxxxxxxxxx If you prefer to simply hit "Reply", and answer on
list, that's OK, too!

Many thanks, for your input!
