Fellow Flexers:

I posted the news, the other day, about our own Ted Grant being awarded the
Order of Canada.

What follows, should have been posted with it, but I've been a wee bit busy.

A few of us know Ted personally, the rest of us only through his occasional
posts. So I thought I'd fill in those of us who don't know him, with a little
background.

First of all, here is the blurb from the Jan 1, 2016 issue of the Vancouver Sun.

Ted Grant

Member of the Order of Canada

With a career spanning six decades, Ted Grant is regarded at the father
of Canadian photojournalism, capturing unique and enduring images of
Canadians from Ben Johnson's Olympic victory to Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeau sliding down a banister. In addition to the many awards and
distinctions Grant has earned, the National Archives of Canada maintains
the Ted Grant Photo Collection, comprising more than 280,000 images.
Another 100,000 images are curated by the National Gallery of Canada,
the largest collection dedicated to any photographer.

This is no small honour to be named to the Order of Canada.  And I believe Ted
is the only photographer to be so appointed.

Ted hates this next bit, because he is simply too modest.  But, in the
Winter/2004 edition of the US magazine, Photographer's Forum, they said "Since
Yousuf Karsh died in 2002, Ted Grant is generally recognized as Canada's
greatest living photographer."  No small accolade, there!

I've known Ted for nearly 20 year and not only do I consider him a close
friend, he is every bit worthy of that statement.

Once you've spent a summer's day on his back deck, with a half-dozen other
photographers, picking through stacks of 11x14 prints, trying to decide which
ones will go in his next book, you'll now what I mean.

A couple of years ago, Rose and I had the opportunity to attend opening night
of his one man show at New York's Leica Gallery.

If he offers you any advice about your photography, you'd best listen.  He's
very seldom wrong.

Although he  has many books out, two I can recommend (I have them all!) are
"Doctor's Work" and "Women in Medicine" (the latter, with his protégé , Sandy
Carter), published by Firefly Press.  Both are fine coffee-table  books that
should be studied, to see how it's really done.  Both are now out of print, but
readily available through various sellers at ABEbooks.com.

So, once again, Congratulations, Ted, on a job well done, and an award well
deserved.
