It’s just early for the waterfowl. They’re more likely to show up once there’s
snow cover and/or sustained subfreezing temperatures. While songbird migration
is more dependent on day length, waterfowl are more driven by food
availability.
Over the past few years, the canyon lakes have been the winter home of more
geese than ducks. It has seemed to me that the playas in town have filled up
first and then the canyon lakes have filled later. I think this is a division
based on species preference, since the proportion of Cackling Geese to Canadas
is higher on the canyon lakes.
As the goose numbers have increased over the years, the duck numbers seem to
have decreased.

Thank you. I remember going to Muleshoe in the very early 80’s while at Tech
and there were “millions”! (At least it’s looked that way!!) It was amazing
to see the numbers.
Another question. I’m surprised there is not a lot of ducks and migrating
water birds on the string of lakes off MLK. Lots of water but not a lot of
birds and with the playa lakes dried up this seems like the logical place.
Is it the depth or lack of nutrition?

Kassie, they seem to winter in the Lubbock area, often ‘gleaning’ the
harvested sorghum fields...historically they’ve been in the field on
CR3600 aka Golf Course Road north of Slaton, where all the lark buntings
were a coupla weeks ago! I’ll give you a heads-up if I see them!

So today about 50+ cranes flew over the house. Is there a place they
stop for rest or feed in Lubbock? I would love to get a closer look. We
would see them down in the Galveston area but they were so far away I
couldn’t really get a great look or a great picture for that matter.
