I’ve contacted Paul off-list too, but I just want to say on-list: thanks Paul! 
This is a useful set of resources and thank you for explaining what’s happening 
in the UK school curriculum.

This is all inspirational. Paul’s work and that of Jane Waite shows how much of 
an impact you can have with great ideas and a desire to share them! 😊 This 
stuff is taking off.

And …Lee’s work on teacher education has gone MASSIVE in South Africa, Vicky’s 
work on a course has had huge impact for teaching students’ academic literacy, 
and others are also having impacts elsewhere!

All these impacts are from practice backed by theory, rather than top-down from 
theory. They’re the result of waving!

Inspirational stuff from everyone I’ve mentioned and others too. It’s a 
privilege for me to be in this community!

Ive been doing various CPD things around Semantic waves and computing
for a while so can dig out stuff I have.

The Computer Science Education community in the UK is up on it.

The reason folks in UK CS Ed are up on it is we managed to get Semantic
Waves included as one of 10 core pedagogic principles of the UK
(strictly English) National Centre for Computing Education - see

so semantic waves are being strongly pushed in the computing area. (That
was initiated because I am on the NCCE Academic board and gave a talk
about it at an early Board Meeting  - have vaguely been wondering if how
it came about in terms of turning theory into actual widespread impact
might make a short LCT talk/case study but not sure) The idea is that
these principles have been used to underpin all the (very vast)
resources for teaching Computer Science in schools the NCCE produced
(including eg ISAACS online resources for A level, GCSE resources as
well as some primary and KS3 resources). They also supposedly underpin
the professional development courses and material for teachers the NCCE
developed and give as well as being taught on those programmes about how
to teach well (and eg Karl helped create this

  This is all part of a programme to develop resources and CPD that
support the changes from teaching ICT to teaching computer science that
happened (now a long time ago) but with the support playing catch up
years behind the change being made. As the NCCE work is a pretty major
intervention and set of resources, it likely has had influence to some
extent throughout the UK.

The separate UK countries have devolved education control though so have
separate curriculum decided by the devolved governments. The NCCE was
set up to support the changes in England primarily. Wales has been
wrapping their approach to teaching computing into their wider changes
to the New "Curriculum for Wales"

which I dont know a lot about the detail but is a complete overhaul that
came into force a few years ago after years of development. (Scotland
and Northern Ireland have/done are doing something similar in
overhauling their whole school curriculum). The Curriculum for Wales is
more I think a framework that schools design their own concrete
curriculum within though. I think it is aiming to be very holistic,
integrated and cross curricula rather than teaching in silos. Computer
Science isnt picked out separately but Digital literacy joins numeracy
and literacy as a core skill for example. My impression was for
computing it is more skills/cross curricula driven than the English
approach of explicitly putting more emphasis on computer science. The
aim is ultimately the same though in terms of more, better computing
skills. Overall it is a massive change to the teaching system in Wales.

for Wales. Interesting!

Hi all

On this Spotify episode, which summarises ‘Making semantic waves’ in
under 3 minutes, the chap says that there’s a lot of talk about
‘semantic waves’ in discussion of the curriculum in Wales. Does anyone
know anything about that? I’m not up on that discussion.
