Dear Friends,
I write to update Bab’s sad announcement that Nancy Cady died recently at
Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. Nancy attended Langley Hill Monthly Meeting
for a number of years. I recall that Nancy worked for the State Department for
many years. She adopted two children and at that time became active in Langley
Hill. She later moved before moving near to Adelphi, where she attended
regularly for years. I recall her daughter’s name was Libby, Carole remembers
it as Layla. In any case, it seems to be an l word.
Two Friends at Adelphi and FCS, Carole Hoage and Amy Greene, shared this
information about Nancy’s later life, for me to share with those who remember
her.

I am not sure what she died of, but she had several serious medical issues.
Her daughters (Layla?) reported that when she went into Adventist Hospital she
had pneumonia (not related to covid-19 apparently), brain cancer which was set
for treatment and long-time liver disease tho that had stabilized many years
ago I believe.
She also had weakness. She had been at a rehab place in late February or early
March and Amy and I went to see her there. She was not wanting to be there and
I think discharged soon thereafter.
She lived with her daughter, the daughter’s five children and her undocumented
husband. Her son was involved to a lesser degree and lives in Virginia I
believe.
We enjoyed having her as part of our Meeting tho we were very aware of her
fragility. She however was feisty and not prone to either self pity or
neediness. She participated enthusiastically. She was a feisty presence who
will be missed at Adelphi.
That’s what I know. Amy, who I am copying on this and was more involved with
her, probably knows more. There is a GoFundMe site set up for the family to
afford taking her ashes back to Colorado. If you want that information, I can
send it.

Nancy seemed to be the mainstay for her daughter and her family, both
financially and in many other ways. Her son lives in Northern Virginia with
his Ethiopian or Ethiopian-American wife. They did not see each either often
but sometimes got together for holidays. He was involved in discussions about
her medical care towards the end.
To my knowledge she never married.

Thank you Carole for letting me know. I will pass on the news to LHFM. They
will want to know, as do I, what did she die from? Was it COVID 19 or related
to it?
I remember Nancy before her illnesses. She worked for the State Department
and in a fairly high capacity as I recall. Quite articulate and professional.
She adopted two children as I recall, and in mid-life and it seemed to change
her life, not for the easier. Don't ever recall as husband or significant
other. Her daughter was always a challenge for her and the Meeting. The boy
more even tempered, but he seemed to move on to independence once he reached
adulthood. Were the children part of her life as she aged, and did they help
her, I wonder? Nancy certainly devoted much of her life decisions to them,
especially the girl. The name Libby comes to mind.
