Hi Joshua,
Thank you for the response. I did look at Dusky, in particular at this
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Dusky_Flycatcher/species-compare/70199711
to compare Dusky with Gray: I think what threw me off is that it says
Duskys bob the tail upward, but this one seemed to bob downward, and it
was frequent ("habitual," as the web page describes it). I'll need to
stare at some photos to get a better sense of head and wing projection
differences.
Thanks again.

Hi Richard,
That’s a great photo of a Dusky Flycatcher. Note the rounded head and short wing projection. As Roger Robb mentioned earlier, other flycatchers do bob their tails a bit, and it can easily throw off empid identification if that’s the main characteristic that is sought out.

Speaking of flycatchers, I found this one about a week ago at
Buford park. After spending half an hour searching the Internet,
I tentatively concluded it was a Gray, in part because it
periodically bobbed its tail downward. I would appreciate
correction or confirmation.
Thanks.

Flat head, long flat bill, and even a black tip to the bill
that's barely visible. Looks like a solid Gray Flycatcher, great

I had a strange empid on top of the Butte today, that falls
into the Dusky/Gray category, it was fairly pale, and gave
"whit" calls but what got me the most was that it had a
surprisingly long bill. Unfortunately I saw no tail bobs.
Good Birding
