Pete:
You do need some sort of a sound card, or at least a serial midi interface.
I'm not an expert on the PC platform others will be of better advice.
However, I have found one of the best and very inexpensive (15 Euros)
sequencers. This is a shareware program from France called "Melody" (works
on PCs

The American/English documentation is very complete and very well done.
With only a translation snafu's.

At least on the Mac version, this has a very good midi synth built into it.
Notes can be entered by mousing or with a musical keyboard, or even computer
keyboard.

Another inexpensive sequencer is the MasterTrax Pro from G-Vox. Sorry,
you'll have to do a search on those terms to find that. Also a nicely
implemented cross platform sequencer.
