Hi all! James=20 I think G got it all- I'd just like to add one or two things (from a Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 perspective) * You need to define your MIDI Port(s): From Options -> Midi Devices, define your input & output ports. These will usually be on your external sound card, or an MPU interface, or the like. * Yes - As G mentioned, you have to "define" your instruments first. Do this from the Options -> Instruments menu. When you open it, it lists 16 tracks for each port installed. On the right, it lists "instrument definitions" for a number of popular modules & keyboards. If yours does not appear, click on "Define" and then "Import". (The definition files are very small, and can be found on a number of web sites - Cakewalk.com & Korgi Park would be good places to start!) *Once Cakewalk knows which instrument(s) you will be using, and which midi ports have been defined, you're all set, and you can follow the instructions as described by G. Oh - one more thing. On the later versions of Cakewalk, you have to "arm" a track for recording, or else no recording will take place. On each track, Cakewalk shows three block-buttons: "M" (Mute); "S" (Solo) and "R" (Record). Click on the "R" button, so that it is highlighted - this arms the track for recording. You can arm as many tracks as you like - but everything you play will be recorded to EACH of the armed tracks, even if they are assigned to different MIDI channels. If no tracks are armed, the global" Record" button is disabled. That's it - I hope I got it right (I'm at work, and don't have Cakewalk in front of me!) MIDI Port should have at least one instrument selected for each Input and Output. I'd suggest, unless you know which device you'll be using, select them all--However, I think MIDI Mapper needs to be unselected? RECORDING Assuming that's okay, you can start recording: 1. Open a new song... let's choose Normal for this example. 2. Click on the first line (first track) 3. In your keyboard, select the sound you'd like to use in this track. (If you have assigned instruments and have X5 properly setup, you should also be able to do this from Cakewalk) 4. Select Time/Key signature by clicking on the 4/4 on the top right of your screen 5. Select Tempo by clicking on the 100 to the right of Time/Key signature 6. Verify that your metronome is setup properly. I usually set it to play MIDI note on Recording, accent first beat, Use Channel 10 in Port 1, with Key F#3 (hi hat). It's a non-intrusive beat. 7. Push record, and go play away! When you're done, push the record button again, or the space bar in your keyboard. 8. Repeat previous step for each track. As you record, you can select different MIDI Channels. Usually, 10 (and 16, depending on your setup) are reserved for Drums. You can have several tracks with the assigned to the same channel, but they will all be bundled together if you need to move volume up or down, for example. PLAYING 1. Open a MIDI file you want to play. 2. Put your X5 in Multiple mode--this will allow Cakewalk to play different voices at the same time. 3. Play the file from Cakewalk. Hope this will help you get started... It's been a while. G =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Take your life in your own hands, and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame.
