how do you rate a system performance ? which benchmarks are you using ?

if you ask me, i care more about the chipset the motherboard is using
than the manufacturer. so far the best performing chipset for athlon has
been the nforce2 platform. i dont think it has any issues with linux.

that depends on what kind of games does your friend play. if it is more
opengl then nvidia is the way to go. go with NVIDIA FX5xxx series, buy
the fastest card the budget will permit.
