Marty,
It *definitely* will affect EV adoption, and not only in the U.S. The sheer
complexity of the EVAmerica interface signals to me that VW is not really ready
to give up ICE sales anytime soon, especially after VW company CEO Brandstätter
said last week that he supports new VW gas/diesel models for the foreseeable
future. He & VW Group CEO Herbert Diess despise each other, so the odds of an
American-style happy ending are looking slim to none at the moment—I expect the
German government will need to intervene soon.
Diess even posted a Youtube video a few months ago of his drive in the new ID.3
across Europe, where he pointed out the relatively poor availability of
charging opportunities.

Robert, this is something that has concerned me for a while because it could
seriously affect the broader adoption of EVs.
For example, it is currently impossible for me to drive a non-Tesla EV from
Maryville to central Mississippi where I have family. In a Tesla, it would be
no problem.
And even if EA had chargers along that route (which they don’t), I have seen
several reports that show how unreliable their chargers can be.
The recent initiative announced by TVA, TDEC, and ETCFC, where they plan to
put a few chargers every 50 miles on major routes in Tennessee is great...but
it’s really just a drop in the bucket (albeit a really important drop).
Tesla’s Supercharger network is the gold standard for coverage, reliability,
and ease of use. The other manufacturers don’t stand a chance unless they
work together to help build out a similarly good network. For the sake of
widespread EV adoption, let’s hope they do it soon!

Legacy car makers still have a ways to go before they can rival the
Supercharger network.
