Well - I have spent a little time comparing the Bullseye and new versions of HOPE (I guess it should all be capitals?). This was done with my Sony MDR-V6s. I paid particular attention around the 6-8 minute of 4th track. I was noticing the hiss during the vocal solo (starting with Politrzania - Brave Strong and True). I noticed the hiss fairly easily during the quiet part of that passage (on the new version initially). I also noticed the bells being played on top of the louder portion of it (and how they moved around the stereo image). When I listened to the Bullseye version in the same two minute segment - I pretty much could hear the same things. It's possible there was a bit less hiss on the new one - but it wasn't night and day. I really doubt that without a side-by-side comparison - you would really have a different listening experience. My only complaint with both discs is that parts of it sound really tinny - with lots of noise sounding like it was mastered off of an old 78 record. It seems to fade in and out - as if parts of the master tape were erased - and replaced with something recorded off of an old Victrola. I suppose this is something that can only be fixed having the original recording of the performance and doing a new mix. Really a shame a masterpiece like HOPE has these sections. I was hoping it would be fixed on the new version - but it pretty much sounds just like the previous releases (and even my old LP copy). Seems worse near the start of the 4th track. Oh well. Maybe the next super release of this album will fix that. This is really an excellent album. Tree in Boring, OR > >
