There was a time when Bose was considered God-like within audiophile circles.
And then in 1971 Consumers Report issued a product review in which it stated
that the sound from the speakers seemed to wander around the room. Bose took
offense, and sued for libel.
The review hurt their reputation, but the lawsuit stained it even more -
especially when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that CR's expression of opinion was
entitled to First Amendment protection.
Bose's expensive reputation has not been the same since.
