[kegswindows] tracking network/server/workstation allocation and information

I'm working on a project to track the allocation and information (model and
serial number, version, capacity, manufacturer, speed, etc) for a network,
server, and workstation. Microsoft has a Windows 98 utility called
MSINFO32.EXE which gives much of this information.
A couple questions:
1) Would this be the best utility to use? How about for other operating
systems?
2) Is there a way to automate the transfer of the information from the utility
into a database for easy access?
