What do education schools teach?
A recent study charges that 14 of the nation's most prestigious
education schools offer teacher preparation that is at best uneven and
at worst intellectually thin and ineffectual, reports EDUCATION WEEK.

What's your experience with schools of education? Just how influential
are they in forming teachers' ideologies and teaching styles? Are
education schools teaching students what they need to know? Weigh in

                  READING LIST

THE FLICKERING MIND: The False Promise of Technology
In the Classroom and How Learning Can Be Saved
by Todd Oppenheimer (Random House, 512 pages, $26.95)
Oppenheimer, a contributing writer for the Atlantic Monthly, spent
three years visiting schools across the country, trying to determine
the extent to which the technological revolution has reshaped American
education. In what TEACHER MAGAZINE's reviewer David Ruenzel a
"sprawling and devastating" book, he concludes that in fact technology
has seriously undermined teaching and learning.

Oppenheimer observes that school technology diverts money from
student-enrichment programs, is subject to frequent breakdowns, and
gives students novel ways to entertain themselves in class. But his
primary concern is that, with its stream of distractive and
easy-to-manipulate images and data, technology fosters a "flickering
mind" that loses the will to struggle with difficult problems or
challenging texts. In the glow of technology, student work becomes
content-light, unmoored by the solid and comprehensive worldview of
good books.

Oppenheimer acknowledges that computers have a place in the classroom,
but he argues that "life's fancy tools" should be used only at the top
level of the learning pyramid, after students have done the ground
work of acquiring knowledge and intellectual capacity.

DIRTY: A Search for Answers Inside America's Teenage Drug Epidemic
by Meredith Maran (HarperSanFrancisco, 320 pages, $24.95)
In a quest for insight into the causes and consequences of teen drug
abuse, veteran journalist Maran follows three adolescents as they
struggle with both drug and life issues, exploring their social
environments, beliefs, and choices. Maran suggests that such children
often suffer from a deep emotional emptiness--and that schools are
partly to blame. She also examines drug treatment programs, and
discusses ways adults can help kids get off drugs.

TUNED IN AND FIRED UP: How Teaching Can Inspire Real Learning in the
Classroom
by Sam M. Intrator (Yale University Press, 188 pages, $23)
Intrator, an assistant education professor who is a former high school
teacher and administrator, examines those moments when "inspired
learning" happens in the classroom, and attempts to understand how and
why such moments occur and how teachers can replicate them. The book
is the fruit of a year's study of a high school English class, where
the purpose, the author says, was to "identify the ways transcendent
educational exchanges come about."

by Matthew D. Olson and Gregory Lawler (New Forums Press, 228 pages,

more than 2,000 teachers against allegations of abuse, this book

by Mr. Lawler, and recommends several reforms in the system.

AN ISLAND OF ENGLISH: Teaching ESL in Chinatown
by Danling Fu (Heinemann, 168 pp., $21 paperback).
Fu, an associate professor of literacy and language, offers insight
into the experiences and struggles of Chinese immigrant students,
basing her observations partly on her experience working as a
literacy consultant at a middle school in New York City's Chinatown.
She reflects on her personal story as an immigrant, as well as the
experiences of her son as an immigrant student, then extrapolates to
other immigrant populations, offering a number of practical
recommendations for educators.
