Subject: [NOVA Teachers] November 18, 2003

Hello Educators,

In next week's "Magnetic Storm," NOVA explores what creates Earth's
magnetic field and why it might be headed for a reversal, a
phenomenon in which the planet's magnetic poles reverse polarity.
(Subjects covered: earth science, geology, physics, gravity
and forces)

In the coming weeks:

Nov. 25 -- Volcano Above the Clouds
            http://www.pbs.org/nova/kilimanjaro/

Dec.  2 -- varies (check your local listings)

Dec.  9 -- Orchid Hunter (R)
            http://www.pbs.org/nova/orchid/

(NOVA usually airs Tuesday nights. Check your local listings.
This program has one-year off-air taping rights.)

     Impact on Animals
This inquiry explores the question of whether a dramatic change
in the Earth's magnetic field would affect creatures that rely
on it during migration. (Grades 9-12)

     When Compasses Point South
See a time line of reversals over the past 160 million years
and find out what scientists know and don't know about magnetic
     field flips. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     Gallery of Auroras
View a slide show of auroral displays and find answers to
questions about why auroras only occur relatively near the
magnetic north and south poles, why they appear in different
colors, and more. (Requires Flash plug-in; non-Flash version
     available.) (Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

     See a Reversal
Watch a computer model simulation that illustrates what happens
     during a magnetic field reversal. (Requires QuickTime plug-in;
     non-QuickTime version available.) (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     NOVA News Minute: Magnetic Storm
Use this news clip to introduce students to a science topic
related to this week's program. Available when the program airs.
Transcript included. (QuickTime or RealVideo plug-in required.)

     Teacher's Guide
In this classroom activity, students study the magnetic fields
around different shapes of magnets. (Grades 3-5, 6-8)

     Program Transcript
The site includes a complete narration for
     this program.

Plus Links and Books.
