National Academy of Sciences
http://www.iwaswondering.com/
is intended to showcase the notable accomplishments of contemporary women
in science and spotlight for young girls the varied and intriguing careers of some of today's most prominent scientists. The site draws from a 10-volume series of
biographies entitled "Women's Adventures in Science," including Amy Vedder,
a wildlife biologist who studies gorillas in Africa; Nancy Wexler, a neuropsychologist
who has researched Huntington's disease; and Cynthia Breazeal, a designer of
robots that can work cooperatively with people. Each of the profiled women
participated directly in the creation of her book and the web site by explaining
her scientific specialty in ways that will inform and engage young minds.

Hilton Pond
http://www.Hilton Pond.org
Drink coffee? Even if you don't, have you ever wondered how coffee
growing in Central America might affect birdwatching in your own
backyard in the U.S. or Canada? Do you know what folks mean when
they talk about "shade-grown" vs. "sun-grown" coffee?
Coffee--and birds and orchids and butterflies and sustainable
farming--are all covered in the 1-7 February 2007 edition of "This
Week at Hilton Pond." (The photo essay really should be called "This
Week at Finca Cristina," an environmentally friendly organic coffee
farm in Costa Rica that's doing shade-grown coffee the "right way.")
To learn more about one farm's efforts to help "our" birds as well
as their own, visit the current installment at
<<http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek070201.html>>
It's an essay with LOTS of photos of Costa Rican flora, fauna, and
habitats, so be patient if it takes a while to load; if the site's
busy, please bookmark it and come back later.
Next week we'll report on our just-completed hummingbird research
expedition in another part of Costa Rica.

The 38th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference will take place in

Earth science educators are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applications Being Accepted for MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2007
Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2007.
http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov
During the week of July 29-Aug. 3, 2007, NASA's Langley Research Center will host a
hands-on workshop designed for educators of students in grades 6-12.
The workshop will focus on the implementation and use of Earth system science
data sets developed for the pre-college education community as part of the
MY NASA DATA program. A major component of the workshop will be the
development of lessons incorporating one or more data sets. The data sets are
derived from the archive of remotely sensed data retrieved from
NASA's Earth Observing System satellites.
Participating teachers will explore topics in Earth system science
(especially atmospheric science), educational application of data sets and
hands-on classroom activities. Participants will experience meaningful
field trips and benefit from the expertise of nationally recognized atmospheric
researchers. Participants will also explore how data sets can be used to
enhance their curriculum and how students can use these data for
inquiry-based learning and research.
