Hello Educators,

In next week's repeat of "The Perfect Pearl," NOVA looks at the science of
pearl farming, follows the efforts of oyster farmers trying to cope with
growing problems of pollution and overcrowding, and considers the shifting
sands of dominance within the pearl industry. (Subjects covered: life
science, animals, ecology, oceanography, technology/engineering)

     What's Killing the Oysters?
     What's to blame for the mysterious decline of the
     Akoya oyster industry in Japan's Ago Bay?
     Pollution? Overcrowding of the oysters? A virus?
     This article outlines theories behind the oysters'
     decline and summarizes some of the possible
     solutions being offered. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     Culture of Freshwater Pearls
     While cultured saltwater pearls have always
     been the industry mainstay, freshwater pearls
     cultured from mussels are now making their mark.
     In this book excerpt, learn about how freshwater
     pearls are cultured, where the first freshwater
     cultured pearls originated, and how China has
     radically altered freshwater culturing.
     (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     How Many Pearls?
     Need to know how many pearls are in a treasure
     chest but don't have time to count? Try
     estimating in this interactive activity.
     (Grades 3-5, 6-8)

     History of Pearls
     Find out the role the pearl has played in
     history and the reverence for pearls that has
     spread throughout the world in this book
     excerpt. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     Teacher's Guide
     In this classroom activity, students look at
     the intersections of science, technology, and
     society when considering the impact of the
     cultured pearl industry on Earth's ecology.
     (Grades 6-8)
