Government Confirms Concerns over SEVIS Implementation
   Students Create Software Companion
   Amazon Enters the Search Fray

GOVERNMENT CONFIRMS CONCERNS OVER SEVIS IMPLEMENTATION
Federal officials this week confirmed suspicions among many colleges
and universities that the recently implemented Student and Exchange
Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is not being used effectively by
customs officers. SEVIS was designed to give the government a tool to
track students and other academics entering and leaving the country in
an effort to root out terrorists, and colleges and universities have
spent significant amounts of time and money meeting the reporting
requirements of SEVIS. Jill Drury of the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) admitted, however, that many customs officers do not
have access to the new database. The primary group of customs officers
at airports or other points of entry does not have access to the SEVIS
database, which is currently restricted to a second-level group of
customs officers. Only first-time visitors or those who cause concern,
however, are directed to that second group of customs officers. Most
people entering on student visas are only screened by the first group.
Officials at many colleges and universities are frustrated, asking why
they were required to put such extensive effort into a program that is
evidently not being used as it was intended.

STUDENTS CREATE SOFTWARE COMPANION
Three British college students have won a Microsoft-sponsored
technology competition with their University Leisure and Lifestyle
Manager (ULL), a software application designed to aid university
students with academic as well as social parts of their lives. Built to
run on smartphones or handheld computers, the ULL offers tools such as
a service that helps students choose textbooks and a feature to provide
feedback on academic work. On the social front, the "Take Me Home, I'm
Drunk" feature sends a message to a local taxi service, indicating
where the user is located and the user's home address. The ULL also
includes a buddy list that can tell users exactly where friends are and
a tool that translates languages for foreign students. The students who
built the ULL were selected from 4,500 entrants in the competition and
will represent the U.K. in Brazil this summer in an international
competition.

AMAZON ENTERS THE SEARCH FRAY
Amazon.com has thrown its hat into the online search ring with a new
service called A9. Search results on A9 are provided by search-engine
leader Google, which also provides paid-search advertisements. Users of
A9 can also use Amazon's "Search Inside the Book" service, launched
last fall, which lets users view selected portions of books online. A
Google spokesman said, "Amazon's strategy ... with the technology" was
not immediately clear but said that Amazon is a valued partner of the
search firm. John Battelle, publisher of Searchblog, however, sees
Amazon's new service as a threat to Google. Comparing how Google
usurped Yahoo as the leading search provider, Battelle said the Amazon
service takes the best of Google and makes it better.
