The September meeting of the Juneau Linux Users Group is currently scheduled for Friday, 27 September 5:30P.M. - 9:00P.M. at the Mendenhall Community Library conference room. The meeting topic will be DHCP and dynamic DNS, along with basic Apache configuration and a demonstration of named based virtual hosts (once the DNS is up and running). Hopefully this will be a fun meeting, and a little more interesting for the participants. The meeting will be in a clinic format - one group will set up and configure the DHCP/DNS server, and another will set up and configure the Apache server. Additional projects are welcome (for example, Postfix or an X server), all you need is an interest in the subject matter and at least one person who can lead the group through setup & configuration in approximately three hours. The general idea is to give our newer members some keyboard time setting up commonly used servers. Those of you with more *nix experience should be prepared to answer questions and provide general guidance. James Zuelow will bring the following hardware for the clinic, which will be sufficient to build the DHCP/DNS & Apache servers and have some DHCP clients: 2 HP Vectra 5/90s (48MB RAM, 512MB/1GB HDD) Debian 3.0 1 Gateway P5-90 (32MB RAM, 1GB HDD) Debian 3.0 1 Gateway P5-100 (32MB RAM, 2GB HDD) Debian 3.0 1 Sharp PC-8700 (24MB RAM, 340MB HDD) Debian 3.0 2 15 inch monitors (don't worry, OpenSSH is installed on all 4 boxes) 2 keyboards. 1 12 port 10Mb/s hub The complete set of official Debian 3.0 CDs will be available, so most any package that needs to be installed will be available. Please note that these machines do not currently have X installed, so this is your chance to brush up on command line skills. One of the Vectras has DHCPD installed but not configured, while the other has Apache installed but not configured. If you would prefer to bring a more powerful machine or your laptop, please bring a patch cable as well so you can connect to the hub. Laptops with SSH installed would be nice, as that would allow more people to work on the servers simultaneously. Also, if you would like to use a different OS on one of the machines, please pipe up on the mailing list so we can make sure it is installed before the meeting. Comments, questions & complaints should be directed to the mailing list. ------------------------------------ This is the Juneau-LUG mailing list.
