I have a contract to photo retouch the work of a local photographer operating
out of Basingstoke. She shoots weddings, bump n baby, some very nice
portraiture and family groups in her studio which is 80% monochrome, high
contrast. My work is principally exposure correction, burn etc, shoot off
(background cyc), blemish and spot removal, some reframing and occasional
"slendering"! (with Liquefy in Photoshop).
She has supplied a Mac with Aperture, along with a Wacom Intuos stylus/tablet
and I must say I have been impressed throughout.
I like to paint on sharpening, particularly eyes, teeth and jewellery.
I think Aperture, of the graphic programs already mentioned is perfect for the
job (only £55), however it's the Wacom A4 stylus/tablet which may be exactly
what you need, if you haven't already got one. Be aware that Apple don't intend
to continue the development of many of their pro products like Aperture.
Best wishes

I am still using my V5.0 Elements, unfortuneatly, since W10, I have had

Now using GIMP.
Pricewise, unless you really need the PRO features Elements tops the list.

If it's a gift then Elements wins over PS. Otherwise Adobe Photoshop
Creative Cloud is a subscription at £8.57 a month or about £700 subscription
free.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the links but a freebie wouldn't dig me out of the hole. I'm
under pressure to give my son ideas for what he might buy me for Christmas.
Thanks again.

Gerry,
I've not used Elements and I only have a really old version of Photoshop
but I rarely use that either. These days I generally shoot in RAW mode
then use Olympus Viewer 3 which is, in essence, a proprietary version of
lightroom for tasks like correcting contrast/ saturation / white balance
etc. However, rather than purchase Lightroom, could I suggest a freeware
alternative which might meet your needs?

If that doesn't float your boat then there's loads of other freebies out
there that might.
For a few alternatives take a look at:

you might find what you're looking for and save a few bob too.

I'm just about to write my hit list for Xmas presents. My first item was
going to be the latest version of Photoshop Elements. The competition is
Photoshop Pro. Has anyone used both and any opinions as to which is the
better?
Bear in mind I've always used Photoshop Elements and feel at home with it.
