Jim, can you confirm that at the Australian search page at the following URL you don't hear any numbers?
http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=testUnlike the current US search pages, the numbers are visible on the Australian pages. So if you can't hear the numbers on Australian search either, my original hypothesis that your problem is caused by the numbers being hidden would be shown to be false.
