xp pro and ms word

Hello to the list,
trying to help a friend, over phone and distance,
, running, xp pro and 4.50, and office 10, and Norton 2004,
when opening a already, saved document
cannot read one word, or one line down, can only read with jaws cursor
if he opens a new document,
it is fine, can read one word or one line, and do what is needed to do,
but after it is saved and closed, and reopened it is just like all the other
documents in my documents,
unable to read correctly
my quick fix, to solve in the short term
open a new document, which is ok,
then open with control o,
and look for the document
wanted, which will read ok,
Norton is updated, but when we looked around in it, couldn't find
miscellaneous, and uncheck office plug in??
the only thing new recently, introduced to computer
was floppy disk
can it be a virus, or worm, that Norton didn't find with full system scan??
any help greatly appreciated
