Yes, you need to go to the support area for Messenger and they list the ports. You probably need to write a rule. My GF and I tried to talk last night; I use Windows Messenger and she uses MSN Messenger 6.2. We couldn't have a conversation. But, when she disabled Zone Alarm, it came right up. So, today, she'll write a rule for Zone Alarm pro. She thought it would dialog her to deny or permit this application, but it didn't. So, the problem likely is with your firewall and specific port allocations, not with the program per se.
