Do you have more than one speech synthesizer installed on the computer. If so, try switching to that synthesizer and open the file again and see if JAWS will read the poem using the other synthesizer. If your student is using a Braille display, try setting the voice synthesizer to "No Speech", then open the file containing the poem to see if your student can read the poem using just the braille display.
