Michael:
These are excellent questions. There are several strategies for dealing with
conflicting keystrokes.
There is always the Pass-through command. Just precede the command in question
with JAWS key plus 3. The next command will be passed through to the
application. In other words, JAWS will ignore it. Otherwise, Jaws will trap
the keystroke and act on it.

I believe Word will let you use just about any key combination you want. I've
used Alt, Windows, and Control -- independently of each other (but with another
key) or in combination with each other.
Here is what I do, or rather, what I've learned to do after several screw-ups:
1. Load a worthless Word document.
2. Try out the commands you think you may wish to use. If nothing happens,
you're probably safe as far as Word is concerned. Otherwise, you may discover
Microsoft or someone in your company's IS department has decided to use your
favorite keystroke for something else.
3. Assuming Word itself (or some other program) isn't trapping your
keystrokes, turn on key describer mode in JAWS (JAWS key plus 1). Try your
keystrokes again. Here, silence is golden. If JAWS describes some function,
you know you have picked a conflicting keystroke. If all is silent, turn off
key describer and go ahead and assign your keystrokes.
You can really do some cool stuff if you do a little scripting. Let's say you
want Word to do something, but want JAWS to say some stuff too.
Let's say you want to use a keystroke to jump to the next paragraph, but
instead of reading it, you just want to hear the cursor position.
You could, using the method described above (and in my earlier post), assign
control plus windows plus P for next paragraph (I have no idea whether this is
a free keystroke) to the next paragraph function in Word.
Then, in the script manager, you can use the same key as the script hot key.
There is a script function that sends the calling keystroke through to the
application (I don't remember it). So, your script would, as its first
function, pass through the control plus windows plus p key, which will tell
Word to jump to the next paragraph.
Then, you could send the script equivalent of Alt plus Delete so that JAWS
would read the cursor position. Very cool.
I think there is a way to change the default JAWS hotkeys, but I don't recall
how to do that. My guess is that it is in the Keyboard Manager.

Ed,
One thing I've wondered about with this sort of situation is what
would happen if you tried to assign a keystroke command that Jaws
needed. Would the software, or Jaws, tell you it can't be used, would
one take priority over the other, ... ? I have another program where
I think a few keystroke commands aren't working because Jaws needs
them and was thinking of reassigning them within the software, but
didn't want to get into trouble with Jaws.
Also, in Word, using your method, can you have your keystroke combo
be a ctrl plus something instead of alt plus something? The ctrl
commands I know in Word seem to work much faster.
