Please understand that I knew what was said. The spirit behind it was just
as I, and Adrian, recognized it to be. It was sarcastic and abusive, and
the insults were all mixed up between resenting the subject line (which was
just a bad translation Amando happened to use; we often say we're "cleaning
up" something when we straighten things up, and so forth; he didn't know
that in context it would mean to stop cursing or something like that. The
person who insulted him did so *after* he politely explained that he'd made
a mistake in English, not before, and went on to say that he was hiding
behind his national flag. It was a hateful bit of creepiness, and it shamed
me to feel associated with it.
Thanks for being understanding. I'm done with this, also, if James is
annoyed. All done.

I don't know if I agree that suggesting that Amando use a spell checker is
xenophobic, however, I do agree that he should not be treated poorly for not
being English, if in fact, that actually happened. I think the real issue
was that his subject line was not as he meant it to be and some of the list
members took offense to his sounding like a list moderator.
That being said, I apologize for this thread being resurrected after James
asked that it stop.

I would like to express my complete agreement with Adrian's comments below.
Astonished by the insulting comments directed at you for your English
Skills, I told the unpleasant story to a Dutch friend in email later that
Day. My friend, who grew up in Rotterdam, now teaches at the prestigious
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He googled your name, saw some
of your online material, and told me that your command of Dutch was
impeccable and that you were obviously a highly intelligent professional
person. I don't know if many Americans understand that anyone who can use
English well enough to be understood on a mailing list such as this is
generally a lot better educated in many ways than most of us in this
traditionally isolated country often are, and not a stupid or inferior sort
of person. Quite the opposite. Regardless, that ignorance is no excuse for
what Adrian very accurately calls it, xenophobia, fear and hatred of the
stranger and the foreigner.
So I would like to also go on record as objecting to your rude treatment,
and to thank Adrian for having the courage of his convictions and speaking
up, at the risk of being misunderstood and resented by others on this
mailing list.

Yesterday I also tried to reach James and Bruce through the link James gave.
When my message was rejected by his server, like yours, I tried James's
direct email, but with no response.
I want to dissociate myself from the comments a couple of listers made about
your English. We had a rash of this about a year ago with another foreign
lister. I admire all people who contribute to this list even when English
isn't their first language. Some of the most generous contributors are from
other countries, and I am deeply grateful for the trouble they take to
communicate and help the rest of us. All people, whether asking or answering
questions, are surely welcome so long as their issue is Jaws-related. I'm
certain the vast majority of subscribers share my view.
I really wanted to have James or Bruce make this statement, but not hearing
from them for 24 hours left a vacuum that needs to be filled. This list is
readily accessed through Google, and it would be terrible not to have
someone go on record as condemning the xenophobic comments that certain
listers made yesterday.
