If you're getting an illegal operation error when you try to load Word, you probably have a corrupt normal.dot template file. The normal.dot file is where the default Word settings are stored, and if it gets messed up, it can do some weird and horrific things. It just gets damaged on occasion, despite normal use. When you reinstall Word, it doesn't fix the problem because it stupidly tries to save your previous settings. But because it's these settings that are messed up, well, you don't fix the problem. You need to delete or rename the normal.dot template. Once that is done, Word will create a new clean copy of this file based on the program's default settings as set by Microsoft. Note that you will lose any settings you had previously made such as in Tools, Options, or Auto Correct, etc. The file path for this file is something like: C:\ Windows \ Application data \ Microsoft \ Templates \ normal.dot Sorry, but with my new operating system now and user profiles set up, my path is a bit different than what it was with Windows 98, but I think that's it. How soon I forget. Smile. Find the file using Windows Explorer and rename it to Normal.old. By doing that, you can preserve the file in case it isn't the answer. Then reload Word and see what happens. If the template was the problem, Word will create a new normal.dot file and then you can safely delete the renamed file. If this wasn't the problem, you can name the file back again. But I'm pretty sure that's your solution. Good luck.
